After a long weekend of running and one day to rest, I am digging into my running schedule for the next month. For the next four weeks I will be doing 16, 17, 18 and 20 miles for my long runs until I taper off the last 2 1/2 weeks before the marathon. September seems a little daunting, but I know I just need to focus on my next run or even my next mile and NOT what I have to run next weekend or the weekend after that.
Small goals in running works a lot better for me than taking in the big picture. If I don’t feel like going out for a run, chances are I can talk myself into getting out there for at least 1 mile and after that mile is done, I can talk myself into another and so on. Breaking it into pieces seems much more doable.
So for now, I am going to focus on my eight mile run tonight. Jeni (and hopefully Shelby) and I are going to run on the Greenbelt trail in Clive (where I did my 16 miles last weekend and 5 miles last night). It is just so nice to not have to worry about getting hit by a car or where to cross the road BUT you do have to watch out for bikers. There are a lot of them and they zoom past you, most of the time with no notice. I guess it could be just at dangerous as being run over by a car!
My 3ish mile run on Tuesday and 5 mile run last night weren’t the best training runs, so I am hoping to break that streak and have a great one tonight, so I’m inspired for my long run tomorrow night.
One of my favorite running quotes of all time sums it up pretty well:
Relish the bad training runs. Without them it’s difficult to recognize, much less appreciate, the good ones.
